On May 11, 2023, the U.S. Department of Labor announced more than $78 million in grants for workforce training programs in 17 states across the U.S. These grants will help address staffing shortages in the healthcare industry and provide a pathway to a career in nursing for those in marginalized communities.
What are the Challenges in the Nursing Industry?
The nursing industry faces several challenges that these grants will help address. Though nurses make up the largest number of U.S. healthcare professionals, the healthcare industry still faces significant staffing shortages. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects an average of 203,000 openings each year for registered nurses through 2031. Adequate staffing improves outcomes for both nurses and patients and is necessary for maintaining and improving the nation’s healthcare system.
How Will the Grants Help?
The Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration will award this funding through the Nursing Expansion Grant Program to 25 public-private partnerships in 17 states. The grants will help expand and diversify America’s pipeline of qualified nursing professionals and will increase the number of nursing educators. They will create equitable opportunities for frontline healthcare professionals to advance in their career path and meet the our nation’s need for critical care today and in the future. The recipients of these grants will improve diversity in the industry and address the equity gap by ensuring people from marginalized communities have a path to a career in nursing.
