What is Different About the Next Gen NCLEX?

If you are taking the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX ®) soon, you need to be aware of the Next Gen NCLEX ®. Every few years, the NCSBN conducts analysis of the foundational knowledge and skills nurses need for safe practice. The analysis found that entry-level nurses are required to make increasingly complex decisions about patients. What is the Next Gen NCLEX ®?

The Next Gen NCLEX ® was created based on research from entry-level nurses and starts April 1, 2023. It has several notable differences compared to the previous NCLEX ®. It uses the Clinical Judgement Measurement Model, which provides a systematic, evidence-based framework for measuring candidates’ competence in clinical judgement and decision making.

The NCSBN has approved five new item types for measuring clinical judgement. These are:

• Extended Multiple Response
• Extended Drag and Drop
• Cloze (Drop-Down)
• Enhanced Hot Spot (Highlighting)
• Matrix/Grid

The Next Gen also uses partial credit in scoring since the new questions have multiple answers. Previously, questions on the NCLEX ® were simply either right or wrong, but now students have a chance to earn partial credit. Note that the new scoring model is different from the passing standard.

The exam also contains a research section taken by select students. The research section does not contribute to the test score. Its purpose is to collect data to help develop scoring rules and determine the amount of time students take on each section. No preparation is required for students who participate.
