The Importance of Dedicating an Area to Studying
Depending on your learning style, studying at home may be a common occurrence for you already. If you have yet to create an optimal studying environment, studying at home may look a little like your bed being scattered with study sheets, books, and more. It goes without saying that a disorganized study area is not conducive to learning. Creating a dedicated study space at home is ideal because it is often the place you feel most comfortable and can best concentrate.
Creating a study space allows you to create a controllable learning environment. And the best part is that you get to be creative when putting that space together. With a dedicated space, you have the option to control factors like lighting, temperature, and sound. Additionally, in your study area, you can ensure you have access to all of your notes, books, stationery, and other tools for studying within reach.
Your Study Space Is All About You
Noise or Silence?
Everyone has their own preferences and needs, even when it comes to studying. Some people require absolute silence in order to focus, while others demand some form of ongoing background noise. This could be anything from muffled crowd noise to a particular genre of music. And although we all have varying study preferences, we are not completely unique; all kinds of audio playlists exist online that you can play in the background to encourage staying focused.
On the other hand, if silence is better suited to your study style, it would be wise to invest in a pair of noise-canceling headphones or earbuds. Furthermore, if you have roommates, it might be good to communicate with them about your needs so that they can be considerate of the quiet times you set aside for studying (and vice-versa).
Find a Comfortable Place
It might cross your mind to designate the bed as your study spot as you brainstorm where to create your comfortable study space, but it is strongly discouraged to do so. A bed is certainly the ideal place to get comfortable, but it is, more often than not, detrimental to studying. The fact is, a bed can quickly prove to be too comfortable and lull you into feeling tired and falling asleep. At the same time, we tend to slouch more when sitting in bed forcing us to adjust every few minutes. An ergonomic setup is always ideal, but not required.
Find Your Lighting
Natural light is almost always preferred when given the option and that is because natural light from the sun has other benefits besides just providing your desk with light. Studies have shown that natural light leads to better mood, improved focus, higher productivity, and more, all of which can make for a better study session.
Unfortunately, not all schedules allow for such luxuries as studying in the daytime. If you work during the day, have classes throughout the afternoon, or are otherwise preoccupied, then studying at night with artificial lighting may be your only choice. Not to fret, there are plenty of lighting options to choose from that allow you to dim, brighten, and even change light colors.
Staying Clean and Organized
Whether you already had a dedicated study space before finding this guide or you now have a designated one after reading this, keeping the space clean and organized is key to mastering an NCLEX ® online review course or any other focus-demanding task. Clutter stifles productivity and increases anxiety and stress by causing you to repeatedly break your focus in order to search for study materials on, under, or around your space.
The easiest way to stop your desk from becoming overwhelmingly messy and disorganized is to incorporate the tidying process into your study routine. If at the end of every study session, pick up and file everything away where it belongs. If you can make tidying up a habit, then your new studying routine will be rewarding and less stressful.
Create a Custom Study Space to Master Your Online NCLEX ® Review
There is no “one-size-fits-all” solution when it comes to designing a study area because we all have our individual preferences and needs. This guide should act as an inspiration and a catalyst to upgrading your study routine rather than a strict checklist or rules to follow. However, with that said, the tips outlined above are proven methods that encourage effective studying and inspire further learning and should remain top-of-mind while designing. Remember, study spaces are personal, and finding that perfect space is what is most important.
